Abstract

The paper gives a review of the palearctic representatives of the family, in which 7 subfamilies, 10 genera and 49 species are recognised. Of these some have been adscribed to other taxa, among them the subfamily Borinae with one genus, Pongonocerinae nov. also with one genus that up to the present had been included within the Pyrochroidae, Pythinae (1 genus), Rhinosiminae (4 genera), Cononotinae (genus Agnathus GERM.),Lacconotinae (genus Omineus LEWIS)and Mycterinae. The type specimens of most of the
non European species were examined and pictured. Larval traits were also discussed in so far as they are known from the literature.

Sphaeriestes Subg. Arabocerus, type: S. impressus WOLL.is described. The dubious species, Rhinosimus vaulogeri AB. is pictured. The following synonyms are established: Caryderus MULS.= Rhinosimus LATR.; Chilopeltis SEIDL.= Lissodema CURT.; Phyto deplanatus MNNH.(vide Typus) = P. depressus L. ; Lissodema cloueti GUILLEB. = L. lituratum COSTA;L. beatulum LEWIS= L. dentatum LEW:; Rhinosimus megrims m. = R. aeneus OL.
