Chorology and Taxonomy of the Genus Omaloplia (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Sericini)
Abstract
The type material of species of the genus Omaloplia Schönherr, 1817 is revised. The morphology and distribution of the species is studied, with emphasis on morphological variability. The following new synonymy, new combinations or new statuses are established: Omaloplia ruricola ruricola (Fabricius, 1775) (= Homaloplia populi Gistel, 1857 syn. n., = Homaloplia arnoldii Medvedev, 1952 syn. n., = Homaloplia nicolasi tergestina Baraud, 1965 syn. n.), O. ruricola nicolasi (Baraud, 1965) stat. n. (= Homaloplia epirota Baraud 1965 syn. n.), O. baraudi pontica Ádám, 1994 stat. n., O. gobbii (Piattella et Sabatinelli) comb. n., O. hericus (Chobaut, 1907) (= Homaloplia hericus majuscula Baraud, 1965 syn. n., = Omaloplia rozneri Ádám, 1994 syn. n.), O. caeca (Baraud, 1965) (= Omaloplia balcanica Ádám, 1994 syn. n.), O. graeca (Reitter, 1887) (= Homaloplia polita oetaea Baraud, 1965 syn. n.), O. mutilata (Fairmaire, 1892) (= Homaloplia corpulenta Sahlberg, 1908 syn. n.), O. spireae spireae (Pallas, 1773) (= Homaloplia spireae var. adulta Reitter, 1887 syn. n., = Acarina margaritacea Ádám, 1994 syn. n.), O. spireae longiclava (Baraud, 1965) comb. n. et stat. n., O. ottomana (Baraud, 1965) comb. n., O. labrata (Burmeister, 1855) comb. n. A new species is described from Greece: O. pubipennis sp. n. The lectotypes for Homaloplia iris Reitter, 1887, Homaloplia lonae Schatzmayr, 1923, Homaloplia alternata v. graeca Reitter, 1887, and Homaloplia mutilata Fairmaire, 1892 are designated. Due to former invalid designation, a new neotype is designated for Scarabaeus marginatus Fuessly, 1775 to stabilize the synonymy of the nominal taxon. Variability of morphological and genitalic features are discussed and known geographical distribution of each species is mapped. A key to species is given and the nomenclature of Omaloplia is discussed by the hand of an bibliographical overview of its use in history.
