Protection of spruce stands against bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) for small forest owners
Abstract
Among so-called small forest owners, i.e. mainly owners of up to 50 ha of forest, there is generally little interest in managing the forests they own. This situation can lead to an increase in the number of insect pests and endanger the forests in the wider area. The main goal of the presented methodology is to provide clear and sufficiently detailed information on the issue of forest protection against bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) on spruce, addressed primarily to the group of small forest owners and their expert forest managers. For these forest owners, who usually do not have professional forestry education or their own professional staff, it provides a clear summary of the legislative obligations of forest owner in relation to the protection of spruce stands against bark beetles. The methodology describes in detail the most important procedures and methods of prevention, control and protection against bark beetles, such as the possibilities of identification, harvesting and sanitation of bark beetle infested trees, the principles
of using trap trees and pheromone traps etc. At the end, a point-by-point summary of activities in relation to the forest protection against bark beetles is formulated according to the seasons. For better visualization, the methodology is supplemented with tabular overviews (e.g. determining characters, insecticides, pheromone lures) and an attached picture appendix.
