The Attelabidae are a species-rich family of phytophagous beetles within the superfamily Curculionoidea. They are classified amongst the primitive weevils. Their typical features include straight, rather than geniculate, antennae, set relatively close to the base of a short to medium-length rostrum, and often a conspicuously narrowed pronotum, which is significantly narrower than the base of the elytra. Colouration is highly varied – ranging from inconspicuous brown and black species to beetles with metallic green, blue, copper or red colouration. The family is notable above all for its bionomics. Females of the subfamily Attelabinae actively modify the host plant before laying their eggs: they make an incision in a leaf or petiole, roll up the leaf or fold it into a characteristic ‘cigar-shaped’ tube, thereby creating a safe environment for the larva. The larvae then feed on the plant tissues within this modified substrate. Larvae of the subfamily Rhynchitinae develop within the buds, fruits or shoots of trees and shrubs. The family is distributed almost worldwide, with the greatest number of species found in tropical and subtropical regions.
