The Boridae are a very small and species-poor family of beetles within the superfamily Tenebrionoidea. Only four species in three genera are known worldwide, with a single species, Boros schneideri, found in Europe. These beetles are closely associated with decaying coniferous wood in old, natural boreal and mountain forests. Their larvae develop beneath the bark of standing deadwood (most commonly pine, spruce and fir), whilst the adults are active predators that hunt small invertebrates beneath the bark of trees at night. The Boridae family is considered a monophyletic group – meaning that all its species descend from a common ancestor. Schneider’s longhorn beetle is a relic of primeval forests, an indicator of well-preserved forest ecosystems and currently one of the rarest beetles in Europe.
