The family Bostrichidae comprises a group of beetles specialising primarily in living within wood. The family is cosmopolitan, with the greatest species diversity found in the tropics and subtropics. Adults have a cylindrical body, a strikingly convex pronotum and a head usually concealed beneath the front edge of the often bumpy or spiny pronotum, which is one of their most distinctive identifying features. The larvae of most species bore tunnels in dead or decaying wood; however, some species have specialised in seeds, bamboo or stored cereals. Several species are major pests of timber and stored agricultural produce. Many species are capable of boring into even very hard, dry wood thanks to their exceptionally strong mandibles and the specific structure of their prothorax.
