Endomychidae is a family of beetles that is currently classified within the superfamily Coccinelloidea. The family is found worldwide, with the greatest species diversity occurring in tropical regions. A characteristic feature of the family is its close association with fungi – both adults and larvae feed on the fruiting bodies and hyphae of macromycetes, often in the cavities of dead wood or directly inside the fruiting bodies. They inhabit mainly intact forest habitats, where they seek out wood-decaying fungi, the spaces beneath the bark of old trees, or the interior of fruiting bodies of puffball fungi, such as puffballs. Members of the family are typically small to medium-sized beetles, often strikingly coloured red, orange or black, with some species resembling ladybirds in appearance. Morphologically, handsome fungus beetles are easily recognisable by a combination of features on their antennae, tarsal formula (3–3–3 or 4–4–4) and wing structure. Some species are considered important bioindicators of forest environment quality.
