The Mycteridae are a small but morphologically very diverse family of beetles within the superfamily Tenebrionoidea. Although there are only around 160 described species worldwide, they form an interesting component of the xerothermic fauna in the Palearctic region, and particularly in Central Europe. The adults are particularly conspicuous due to their characteristic elongated rostrum, from which the genus Mycterus takes its name. Records of adults are mainly from dry and warm habitats, where they visit the flowers of plants in the Asteraceae and Apiaceae families. The larvae develop under bark or in dead wood, where they feed on fungal hyphae. This family is an important bioindicator of well-preserved forest-steppe and relict habitats.
