Nosodendridae are a small, evolutionarily ancient family of beetles with a now cosmopolitan distribution, but comprising only a few genera and roughly 123 species, including fossil representatives. Molecular phylogeny shows that Nosodendridae form a separate superfamily, Nosodendroidea, and occupy an isolated position within the suborder Polyphaga. Adults are minute, oval-domed, usually dark brown to black, with conspicuous 11-segmented antennae bearing a three-segmented club and a broad nuchal shield. A characteristic feature is their close association with specific microhabitats, specifically the sap exudates of wounded deciduous trees, where they feed on microscopic fungi and yeasts. The larvae develop in subcortical or woody cavities. Within the Czech Republic, we encounter only a single species, whose presence in the ecosystem is an indicator of old, well-preserved deciduous stands with a sufficient number of naturally damaged trees.
