The family Ochodaeidae is a small and relatively little-known group of beetles within the superfamily Scarabaeoidea. These beetles are found throughout the world, with the exception of Australia, but they are most diverse in the dry and sandy regions of the subtropics and tropics. They are small to medium-sized beetles, notable for their domed, oval body, which is usually densely hairy and coloured in shades of yellow-brown, rust or chestnut. Members of the family are also characterised by club-shaped antennae and the distinctive structure of the tibiae of their middle legs. The biology of most species remains poorly understood. It is thought that both larvae and adults live in the soil and feed on decomposing organic matter, or possibly fungi or plant roots. Adults are strictly nocturnal or crepuscular, with occasional mass flights on warm summer evenings, when they are attracted to artificial light sources.
