Phloeostichidae is a small and taxonomically rather specialised family of beetles within the superfamily Cucujoidea, with a cosmopolitan but scattered distribution – some genera are found in the Palearctic, others in Australia, Tasmania and South America. It is one of the least species-rich families in the order — currently comprising only four extant genera and approximately eight described species. Members of the family are small, inconspicuous beetles living under tree bark, with adults feeding exclusively on fungi (they are mycophagous), whilst the larvae consume both fungal fruiting bodies and plant tissue in the bark. In Europe, only a single species of the family is known, Phloeostichus denticollis, which is considered rare and is found in mountainous and submontane deciduous or mixed woodlands.
