The family Ptilodactylidae (“toewinged beetles”) is a medium-sized group of small to medium-sized beetles, predominantly associated with damp habitats in the tropics and subtropics. Most species are associated with damp, riverine, coastal or otherwise semi-aquatic habitats. The adults, which are terrestrial, are found on vegetation near water and some feed on microscopic fungi, whilst the larvae often live in damp, decaying wood, litter or on the banks and in the shallow parts of flowing waters, where they feed on decaying plant matter and probably also on microscopic fungi. Morphologically, they are small to medium-sized beetles with an elongated, often arched body, conspicuous antennae (often comb-like in males) and characteristic tarsi with ‘feather-like’ projections, after which the family and the type genus were named.
