The family Scraptiidae comprises small, softly sclerotised beetles, which are usually 2–6 mm long (in the Czech Republic 1.5 to 4.0 mm), often with a slender, elongated oval body and fine hairs on the elytra. Adults are strongly heliophilic and, during warm spring and summer days, visit the flowers of trees and herbs in large numbers, where they feed on pollen, nectar or surface coatings (lichens, etc.), thereby contributing to plant pollination. The larvae are typically saproxylic – they develop concealed within dead wood beneath the bark or in hardwood fungi, where they feed on decomposing organic matter and fungal mycelium. This family is most diverse in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. Fossil finds attest to the family’s existence since the Eocene, or possibly even earlier periods, which indicates a long evolutionary history within forest ecosystems.
