Tetratomidae are small to medium-sized beetles associated primarily with fungi and decaying wood. Both adults and larvae most commonly develop in the fruiting bodies of wood-decaying fungi, particularly polypores, and on branches or beneath bark infested with mycelium. The body is usually oval to elongated, often finely to densely hairy, coloured brown to black, sometimes with orange or red spots. Adults are predominantly nocturnal and are found in forest habitats. Faunistic studies from Europe show that, in our region, the Tetratomidae constitute a species-poor but ecologically specific group of saproxylic beetles associated with intact forest stands and deadwood. Palaeontological finds from Baltic and Cretaceous amber indicate that the family is evolutionarily ancient and has been present in forest ecosystems since at least the Cretaceous period.
