Voltinism is a term used in biology to refer to the number of broods or generations of an organism per year. The term is most often applied to insects.

  • Univoltinism (monovoltinism) – referring to organisms that have one brood or one generation per year
  • Bivoltinism (divoltinism) – referring to organisms that have two broods or two generations per year
  • Trivoltinism – referring to organisms that have three broods or three generations per year
  • Multivoltinism (polyvoltinism) – referring to organisms with more than two broods or generations per year
