Ground beetles, as this family is called in Czech, are fast predatory beetles with long legs, distinctive eyes, and strong mandibles, adapted for active hunting. Adults run very fast on the ground, and some species fly briefly when disturbed. The larvae live in vertical burrows in the soil, where they lie in wait at the entrance and catch passing prey, which is usually small insects. Their typical habitat is dry, sandy or stony soil, sunny forest edges, paths, dunes, heaths, etc. These are often habitats with open soil surfaces without dense vegetation. Ground beetles are sensitive to habitat changes and the loss of suitable environments, so they are often used as indicators of habitat quality.
