Hygrobiidae is a very small, taxonomically isolated family of aquatic beetles in the suborder Adephaga (genus Hygrobia), typical of stagnant shallow waters with soft muddy bottoms. Adults and larvae are predators specialized on small invertebrates in the sediment. Notable in this family is the ability to striulate (audible 'whistling' sound) and the palaeobiogeographic disjunction between the Palaearctic and Australian faunas. Generally, the family is monotypic, containing a single recent genus Hygrobia.
