Bioindication is a key tool in modern ecology, allowing us to read the state of the environment through living organisms. While physical and chemical measurements provide us with an instant "snapshot" of air or water quality, bioindicators – organisms that are sensitive to environmental changes – give us information about the long-term state and stability of the entire ecosystem. Among terrestrial invertebrates, the family Carabidae occupies an important position in this regard.
Ground beetles are abundant, species-rich and well researched. They often respond to moisture and temperature gradients, soil surface structure and the degree of habitat degradation. Monitoring is mainly carried out using ground traps, which allow standardised data collection across time and space. The bioindication system for Carabidae in the Czech Republic has gradually developed on the basis of long-term research. Currently, species are categorised according to their habitat dependence and sensitivity to environmental changes as relict (R), adaptable (A) and eurytopic (E). These categories facilitate the interpretation of field data and enable effective ecological assessment of sites.
The quality of a biotope is not assessed solely on the basis of the presence of a single "rare" beetle, but on the structure of the entire community. The following are usually monitored:
- Ratio of ecological groups: The predominance of R and E species indicates a well-preserved habitat.
- Diversity index: A higher number of species with even representation indicates a balanced ecosystem.
- Presence of specialists: For example, the occurrence of wingless (brachypterous) species indicates long-term habitat continuity, as these beetles are unable to move quickly to another location if the site is destroyed.
The following paragraphs explain the individual columns in the table below.
Taxon
The list was compared with the Carabidae (23 November 2017) and Cicindelidae (1 January 2017) family catalogues on this website. The names of taxa in the list have been updated according to these catalogues.
Bioindication group
The abbreviations used for individual bioindicator groups are explained in the following table:
| Abbreviation | Name | Description |
| R | relict species | These are species with the narrowest ecological valence, many of which are now relics. They are mostly rare and endangered species of natural, relatively undamaged ecosystems. |
| A | Adaptable species | These are species that inhabit more or less natural habitats or habitats close to their natural state. They also occur in secondary, well-regenerated biotopes, especially near their original areas. |
| E | Eurythopic species | These are species that often have no special requirements in terms of the character and quality of the environment, species of unstable, changing biotopes, as well as species inhabiting landscapes that are heavily anthropogenically influenced and damaged. |

Ecological group
Ecological groups were taken from lists originating from this source: P. Vonička et al.: Lists of indicator species of animals and fungi for individual types of natural habitats according to the Czech Republic biotope catalogue, Ecological Services, September 2016
The terms listed are used in entomology (and ecology in general) to describe the ecological relationship of insects to a particular environment or specific conditions (soil, humidity, salinity).
The suffixes are of fundamental importance:
- -biont: The organism is strictly bound to a given environment and cannot exist without it.
- -phile: The organism prefers a given environment but is able to survive elsewhere.
The following ecological groups are used in the table of bioindicators:
| Term | Description |
| Link to saline environments (salt marshes) This group includes species living in places with high salt content. |
|
| Halobiont | A species living exclusively in saline habitats (e.g. inland salt marshes, sea coasts). It dies without salt. |
| Halophile | A species that seeks out salty environments but also occurs in habitats with low salinity. |
| Subhalophile |
A species that tolerates salt and often occurs on the edges of salt marshes, but is not directly dependent on it. |
| Connection to moisture and water | |
| Hygrophile | A moisture-loving species. Requires a high level of humidity (e.g. floodplain forests, marshes). |
| Ripicole | A species bound to the banks of water bodies (rivers, streams, lakes). Often lives in sediment or under stones near water. |
| Subripicole |
A species that prefers proximity to water, but can also be found in the wider vicinity of riparian vegetation, not directly at the water's edge. |
| Substrate dependence (sand) | |
| Psamobiont | A species exclusively associated with sandy substrates (e.g. dunes, drifting sands). It cannot complete its development in other types of soil. |
| Psamophile |
A species that prefers sand (e.g. because it is easy to burrow in), but is also able to live in other light soils. |
| Bound to peat bogs | |
| Tyrphobiont | Species critically bound to peat bogs. These are often glacial relicts (remnants from the Ice Age) that cannot survive elsewhere. |
| Tyrphophile |
A species that finds optimal conditions in peat bogs, but can also inhabit other acidic and waterlogged areas. |
| Connection to heathland | |
| Callunobiont | A species that is dependent on heathland for food or habitat (often monophagous insects that feed on heather). |
| Callunophile | A species that prefers heathlands, but also occurs in dry coniferous forests or on dry slopes with similar characteristics. |
Status in habitat
Habitat statuses were taken from lists originating from this source: P. Vonička et al.: Lists of indicator species of animals and fungi for individual types of natural habitats according to the Czech Republic biotope catalogue, Ekologické služby, September 2016
The abbreviations used for individual habitat statuses are explained in the following table:
| Abbreviation | Type | Description |
| Dg | Diagnostic | Species whose presence defines a given type of biotope complex in relation to other habitat types; in rare cases, a diagnostic species may also be a constant (or even dominant) species. |
| Rar | Rare | Species that are generally rare but occur more frequently within a given type of biotope complex. |
| Konst | constant | Species characteristic of a given type of biotope complex with regular occurrence in that type of biotope complex, but which are not exclusively linked to that type of biotope complex and also occur in other types of biotope complexes. |

Indicates whether the taxon occurs in the Czech Republic. The data corresponds to the status of the catalogues with which the list was compared:
